Once you have “proof of concept”—i.e. have demonstrated in some tangible way that your project is meeting the needs of those it’s intended to serve and the revenue and expense assumptions have been confirmed-- it’s time to start prospecting for individual donors and foundations interested in your type of project. There are searchable foundation databases to identify grant opportunities for which you can apply, but be aware that foundations often provide one-time grants, not recurring. In almost all cases it will be important to identify, connect with and cultivate individual donors interested in your project from the very beginning, because they are most likely to help you sustain it.
